The idea of Laguna nel bicchiere (Lagoon in a glass) was born in 1993, when the teacher Flavio Franceschet and his pupils start a research on agriculture and winemaking in Venice. The didactic purpose was to raise awareness about our land, its colours, the taste of its produce and the changing of the seasons.
They discover the vineyard of San Francesco della Vigna and the students help the Franciscan friars with the grape harvest, the pressing and the bottling of the wine.
Once Flavio retires he continues to promote the wines of the lagoon and founds a non-profit organization "Laguna nel bicchiere, le vigne ritrovate" (Lagoon in the glass, the discovered vineyards), with the aim of recovering the vineyards, and preserve the connection between city and farm that is at the soul of Venice.
The first vineyard they take in management is in the island of Giudecca. Almost at the same time, the last Franciscan Friars that used to live in San Michele (where the cemetery is) leave the island, and the Association takes over both the vineyard and its historical winery.
Now the Association is looking after the vineyards of Giudecca, San Michele, Sant’Erasmo, Vignole, Sant’Elena and Malamocco, and produces several labels.
It will be possible to taste all their wines at Local, on Thursday 16th December, at 6.00pm.
